4Oli uses only voices your browser identifies as local. If speech is unavailable, you can still build and show a message. Help explains voice setup.

Personal words and pictures

Each starting board keeps its own words, favourites and settings. Your changes stay in this browser on this device. They are not uploaded. Changing the board can move buttons; choose a familiar layout with the person using it.

Keep a backup

Export the current board’s settings and personal words to a file. Adult and child boards have separate backups. The backup may contain personal pictures or names: keep it private. Messages are never included. Clearing browser data or changing device can remove your board.

Use only pictures you have permission to use. Personal pictures stay on this device and appear in exported backups.

Tap word buttons to build your own message, then press Speak. Tap a word in the message to remove it. Undo brings back your last change. Quick Yes, No, Stop and Help speak immediately when you tap them. Type lets you use any words you choose. Show message makes your words large enough for someone else to read.

Communication pictures use the Mulberry AAC symbol set, with original 4Oli diagrams for additional concepts. Labels stay visible. Choose Adult or Child at the top to open a separate starting board; each keeps its own personal words, favourites and settings. Switching boards clears the current message. Both boards keep shared core words in the same starting positions. These are starting points, not a prescribed vocabulary for an age. Choose vocabulary and access methods with the person using them, with AAC or speech-and-language support where useful.

Add 4Oli to your Home Screen

iPhone / iPad: open this page in Safari → Share → Add to Home Screen → Open as Web App (if shown) → Add. Then open the 4Oli icon.

Android: open the browser menu → Install app or Add to Home screen, if offered.

Open 4Oli online first and wait for “Offline board ready”. Your device may remove downloaded website data when storage is low: keep a backup and a paper communication option.

If you cannot hear the voice

  1. Check your device volume and audio output.
  2. Open Settings here and choose a downloaded voice. Press Test this voice.
  3. On an iPhone, downloaded voices can be managed through the device’s Accessibility speech settings; the exact menu depends on iOS.
  4. Some browsers expose no usable local voices. Try Safari on iPhone or another supported browser, and test on the actual device before relying on speech.

Offline speech depends on the installed device voice. 4Oli does not upload messages to an online speech service. Apple voice guidance.

Privacy and your choice

No account, adverts, analytics, microphone or camera access. Your personal board is saved on this device; no message history is stored. The website host receives normal connection requests to deliver the app, but 4Oli does not send the words you select or type to a server. Protect shared devices and exported backups.

4Oli is a free app with separate English adult and child starting boards. It is not affiliated with Proloquo2Go. It does not yet include eye-gaze or dedicated switch-scanning access. Buttons support keyboard and screen-reader operation. Keep access to the person’s established communication system while trying a new one.

When something is urgent

The Help, Stop and body/pain words communicate a message; they do not call anyone or contact emergency services. A communication partner should respond to what the person says and use the usual emergency route when needed.
